From Volunteer to Event Manager: A Journey of Personal Transformation

Absolutely, it’s a journey that I’m truly grateful for. It all began as a young teenager full of energy and a sense of knowing it all. I grew up in a rough area where opportunities seemed scarce, and I couldn’t see a clear way out. It was during this time that I volunteered in Sherwood Forest. My motivation was twofold – to make a positive impact and also to spend more time with my dad, who was working there too. Little did I know that my path would intersect with an opportunity that would change the rest of my life.

Of course, his name is Colin Brooks, co-owner of Fireside events and one of the creative minds behind Gathering of the North. Colin saw something in me that I couldn’t see in myself at the time. He recognised my potential, even when I was unruly and overly confident in my teenage belief that I knew best.

Colin took me under his wing, providing guidance and support. Working alongside him over 17 years has been an eye-opening experience. It showed me that my unruly energy could be channeled into something positive and constructive. I found a sense of purpose and direction that I had been searching for.

It was more than just lending a helping hand. I was gaining invaluable experience, learning the ropes, and developing essential skills in events and marketing. But what stood out the most was the boost to my confidence. The responsibilities and trust I was given helped me believe in my capabilities. I was challenged to be better, and so I fought to be better.

Fast forward several years, and I’m now an established high-level manager in the events and marketing industry. My journey from being an unruly teen volunteer to a confident and accomplished professional is a testament to the transformative power of volunteering. It’s proof that sometimes all it takes is the right opportunity and the right mentor to set you on a new path in life.

Volunteering isn’t just about giving your time; it’s an investment in your own growth and future. The skills you acquire and the lessons you learn can be the gateway to a brighter future you might not have envisioned.

So, if you’re thinking about volunteering, know that it’s not just about lending a hand; it’s about opening doors to new experiences, forging connections, and discovering your potential.

Thank you for having me, and I hope my story can inspire others to take that first step into the world of volunteering and discover the incredible journeys it can lead to.
