The Coventry Levy

The clash of steel, the roar of the crowd and the unmistakable energy of late medieval combat are returning to Sherwood Forest May 23-25th 2026. Among the households stepping into the arena for this year’s Tournament of Champions is a group with deep roots in the Wars of the Roses Federation and a reputation for bringing history to life with humour, skill and heart. Welcome to The Coventry Levy.

Based in the Midlands, the Coventry Levy have spent the last nine years portraying late fifteenth century life through combat, craft and living history. Their season runs from March to October and their members can be found at events across the country, proudly representing the world of the Wars of the Roses.

Their inspiration is simple and sincere.

As they put it, their work is driven by “a love of history and bringing the past to life in a fun, interactive and immersive way.”

It is this spirit that makes them such a strong fit for the Tournament of Champions.

The Coventry Levy offer a lively and interactive portrayal of medieval life, with a particular focus on combat weapons and fighting styles. Their displays are energetic, engaging and rooted in the martial traditions of the late medieval period.

Their most popular act is one that always draws a crowd. The comedic tourney has become a signature moment for the group, blending skill with humour and giving audiences a chance to enjoy the lighter side of medieval combat.

Visitors are often surprised to learn that the entire group is made up of volunteers. As they explained, “we are volunteers and do this as a hobby.” Behind the armour and the spectacle is a community of people who simply love history and want to share it.

The group also includes skilled craftspeople who produce clothing, manuscripts, arrows, metalwork and woodwork. These handmade elements enrich their displays and help bring the fifteenth century to life.

The Coventry Levy represent the late medieval period, specifically the late fifteenth century during the Wars of the Roses. It is an era filled with political intrigue, shifting loyalties and dramatic battles, and the group’s portrayal captures both the grit and the humanity of the time.

Their connection to this period began through reenactment many years ago and has grown into a long standing passion. The combination of armour, weaponry, heraldry and storytelling continues to draw them deeper into the era.

The Coventry Levy are stepping into the arena at Gathering of the North after hearing glowing reports from other groups who have taken part. They have also performed at Sherwood before and hold a genuine affection for the venue.

“We know other groups who have taken part previously and really enjoyed the experience and we have attended an event at this location before and loved the venue too.”

Their favourite part of historically inspired events is clear. “Combat demonstrations.” The Tournament of Champions is the perfect stage for them.

You will find the Coventry Levy competing in this year’s Tournament of Champions, bringing late medieval combat to the heart of Sherwood Forest. Expect skill, humour, camaraderie and a household that fights with both precision and personality.
