Sherwood Forest is preparing for a weekend filled with sword tournaments, living history, early medieval crafts and the unmistakable atmosphere that settles around the Major Oak when the past comes to life. Among the traders joining us is a long‑established favourite of the reenactment world: The Longships Return.
Based in Sutton in Ashfield, this Dark Age, Viking and Saxon themed trader has spent almost a decade supplying reenactors, LARPers and history enthusiasts with high quality, historically inspired goods. Their tent is famously full to the brim with woodenware, pelts, blacksmith work, pewter, candles and curiosities that speak to centuries of craft and culture.
As they put it, “the Tent which is packed with stuff will have to do” while they continue working toward their dream of a full reenactors supermarket.
Craftsmanship Rooted in History
The Longships Return specialise in wooden items shaped to match finds from the 4th to 13th centuries. Bowls, cups, spoons, stools, looms, shields and spear shafts are all made using wood species that would have been available in the period.
“We make all the wooden items and are prepared to make items bespoke to your requirements. Provide the drawing or imagery and we will try to make it for you.”
Their stock extends far beyond woodwork. Visitors will also find:
- Sheepskins and pelts including Icelandic, reindeer, goat and the much loved flokati
- Hand forged blacksmith items such as sword chappes, strap ends, shield bosses and spearheads
- Asgard pewter replicas
- Beeswax drop candles from a Welsh artisan • Alchemy England jewellery for Pagan, Goth and Rock fans
- Bolt Action and historical wargaming figures
- Viking and Saxon coins from just £1 for younger visitors
Everything is chosen with authenticity and atmosphere in mind, making their stall a favourite for both reenactors and families exploring the forest.
A Trader Known for Warmth and Service
One of the most surprising things about The Longships Return is their personal approach to customer care.
“Even away from the field we will provide a by appointment drop in service at our home to display the items you are interested in and hopefully make you welcome to have coffee and chat over the sale of a few items.”
Their passion for the Viking era began early in life. As they shared, “Since being very young I have been interested in the Longships of Viking times” and that enthusiasm has shaped their entire business.
Why Sherwood Forest
For this trader, Gathering of the North is a natural fit.
“We are local based in Sutton in Ashfield and have been at the Major Oak many times either as a reenactor, trader or member of the public.”
Their favourite part of historically inspired events is simple and heartfelt.
“The people, the action and adventure they conjure up and the retelling of history and the life and skills of the people back in the day.”
