Saffrron Crafts

Sherwood Forest is preparing for a weekend filled with early medieval life, sword tournaments, woodland characters and historic craft. Among the returning makers joining us is a trader whose work is instantly recognisable for its quality, research and handmade detail. Welcome back to Saffrron Crafts, who you will find this year on the Main Green right beside the joust arena.

Saffrron Crafts has been supplying handmade historical clothing and accessories for more than ten years. Every garment on their stall is researched, patterned, stitched and finished by hand.

As they put it, “People are always surprised to learn that every item on my stall has been made by me and not bought in from another supplier.”

Their work is rooted in years of study and a genuine love of historic dress. Fabrics are chosen with accuracy in mind, mainly linen and wool, and soft toys are CE tested to modern safety standards. It is a stall where craftsmanship and care are at the heart of everything.

Saffrron Crafts began when a friend in a local living history and combat group encouraged the maker to start producing kit for the team. What began as outfits made for personal use soon grew into a full historical clothing business.

“My stock is all handmade by myself using historical patterns and years of research.”

Their range covers Viking, medieval and pirate clothing, with the option to commission outfits from almost any era. Whether you are building a full living history impression or simply looking for a standout piece for an event, Saffrron Crafts offers garments that feel both authentic and comfortable.

Their best selling item has become something of a signature piece.

“Our hooded cloaks, fully lined with a faux fur trim, are a stand out in a crowd item but also nice and warm.”

Perfect for wandering the Main Green, watching the joust or exploring the woodland paths.

Everything on the stall begins with research. Patterns are checked against historical sources. Fabrics are chosen to reflect the era. Soft toys are tested to modern standards. It is a level of dedication that gives Saffrron Crafts its reputation for reliability and authenticity.

“Everything I make is researched for patterns and fabrics if historical and CE tested if a soft toy.”

This attention to detail is one of the reasons they were so keen to return to Gathering of the North after trading with us last year.

“After trading at Gathering of the North last year we were keen to return to this wonderful event again.”

For Saffrron Crafts, events like Gathering of the North offer something special.

“Historical inspired events always offer such a diversity of activities and entertainment while maintaining a warm, calm, welcoming atmosphere.”

Sherwood Forest, with its mix of action, storytelling and community, is the perfect setting for their work.

As you explore the event next weekend, look for Saffrron Crafts on the Main Green beside the joust arena. Their stall is a place to browse, ask questions, feel the fabrics and discover clothing that brings history to life.

You can follow their journey and find them at future events on Facebook and Instagram. They will also be appearing at:

  • Bamburgh Castle on 14 June
  • Houghton Festival on 20 June
  • Fantasy Forest on 18 July
